Growing up I only remember one time having a carved pumpkin for Halloween. For Jon, it was something his family did every year. Since it was something that Jon loved to do with his family, we've been carving pumpkins for the past six years.

We've been going to a local place called Meadow Farms to get our pumpkins. This year we didn't get there until four days before Halloween. As you can see, they were a little picked over.
We love going there because they always have something fun for the kids to play with. There's always a bouncy house and a maze inside for the kids. This day we went before taking Michael to school.
Michael picked out my pumpkin and put it on the cart for me. Jon was rather impressed at how well of a pumpkin picker he was.
For Michael, we use these awesome
Mr Potato Head style kits instead of him carving. We haven't decided on what would be an appropriate age for him to start carving and he really hasn't asked to make pumpkins like Mommy and Daddy. These were his choices this year. The cowboy was bought this year at Target and the other two were bought a few years ago at Walmart.
Michael picked out the pirate set. We decided that
the pumpkins we picked at Hill High Farm would do just fine. They were the perfect size for these kits! If you haven't used these kits before, they are rather hard to poke the pieces into the pumpkin. Even though it's safe for the little ones, an adult will still need to help them out.
Michael loved making his pirate that he wanted to make the cowboy. Luckily we had another small pumpkin for him to make another.
I always let Jon cut my pumpkin open. He always does a better job at it than I do.
This year I bought this awesome scraper from
Pumpkin Masters to help with getting all the guts out of our pumpkins. So much better than the tiny little scrapers in the carving kits.
I chose a simple pattern because as usual with us, we were carving our pumpkins with only hours to spare before trick-or-treating began.
Jon picked this monster because he knew Michael would get a kick out of it.
Luckily Michael was napping or both of us wouldn't have been able to carve our pumpkins at the same time.
A part of Jon's pumpkin broke off. We didn't have any tooth picks. Ended up clipping a paper clip to size to put the piece back on.
Did the trick and Jon was happy with the effect that it created.
